Modern Garden Bench
Red grandis
A place to sit with clean lines and oodles of details
Aldo Leopold was a conservationist who designed a very distinctive bench to serve his bird watching habit. That design was made to be easy and quick to build. When we were asked to build a bench inspired by Mr. Leopold's design, we wanted to keep the essential form (those unmistakeable legs) but imbue it with furnituremaking sensibility.
This bench was made from red grandis, an insect and rot resistant wood. It features a floating seat base. The curve at the leading corners of the seat continue up around the backrest. Mortise and tenon joinery throughout lends a sense of solidity.
